Carvers from Tahiti, Hawaii, Marshall Islands, and throughout the Pacific had carved their canoes. This was the final day of the Festival of Canoes in Lahaina. They had paraded their vessels down Front Street that morning, and then brought them down to the beach to await the launch at sunset--as hundreds watch, the carvers will chant their lineages, and the lineage of their canoe. They will birth their vessel from being a part of the forest to the realm of the ocean.
